Single versus multi viscosity gear oil?

my rav4 states that I should use a single viscosity gear oil (SAE90) for my transfer case %26amp; rear differential. while for the transmission oil it recommends a multi-viscosity oil (75W-90).

question, can I use the multi-viscosity oil (75W-90) for the SAE90 requirement of my transfer case %26amp; rear differential? would this be too thin?

Best to follow manufacturer's recommendations on this. Most likely they came up with the oil weights after long term tests to determine best longevity of the components. It will probably work fine running 75-90 in both for the short term but it may shorten the life of the transfer case and diff. Talk to a Toyota mechanic to be sure though.Single versus multi viscosity gear oil?
stick with the 90 and 75/90 as it tells you. The 75/90 will let your tranny shift easier in extreme cold weather. There is no reason to have multi. vis. in rear end %26amp; transfer.
