Where can i find a viscosity additive for chain saw bar oils?

You don't need this..just buy season appropriate oil for your chain oil, comes in light for winter, medium for spring and fall, and heavy for summer.Where can i find a viscosity additive for chain saw bar oils?
Take a look in your local phone book and look in the Yellow pages for equipment rentals. You should see a sub category for equipment maintenance. Most rental places as well as home improvement stores wil carry that additive.

Using two different viscosity motor oils

Is it alright to use 4 quarts of 5w-30 and 1 quart of 5w-20 oil in my car? The car is a 2004 Subaru Legacy and the oil is Castrol Syntec Blend. The car only takes 4.7 quarts of oil, so really I'd only be using .7 quarts of the 5w-20. Using two different viscosity motor oils
there will be no problems mixing the oilUsing two different viscosity motor oils
I would switch to full synthetic, but there should be no problem.

    Mixing Motor Oil Viscosities?

My car needs an oil change badly. Most of its motor oil has evaporated from sitting there for two months (I know how bad that is for Delco Batteries).

The problem is that I need to move it 67 miles away from its current location because we moved. I know it will make the trip. When I get there I plan to do a complete oil change.

I have two quarts of 5W-30 and one quart of 5W-20. Will it be safe to mix those two? The ride is only once, as soon as I get there I will change the oil and filter as I have the supplies there.

Can anyone help!? Please and Thanks!Mixing Motor Oil Viscosities?
Oil does not evaporate, you either have a leak or the car burns oil. Yes oil is safe to mix, you end up with a viscosity somewhere between the two you are mixing.Mixing Motor Oil Viscosities?
Motor oil inside a engine does not evaporate, it all leaked out.

Yes you can mix those two oil weights.

Can old oil, or mixing oil viscosities have the same effect as no oil on an engine? (throwing a rod bearing)?

I bought an old mbz 190d diesel- The oil looked like it was suposed to- black. yesterday, the temp got a little higher than normal, but not overheating. I also notices a new click noise, faint. It leaks some oil, so I topped it off with 10w40. I don't know what was currently in there.

It began making the clicking knocking noise louder while running, and within 15 miles stalled and I believe it is near siezing.

I imagine that I threw a rod bearing or did some kind of severe internal engine damage. I'm trying to figure what the culprit was. old bad oil with viscosity breakdown? mixing oil types, or was this just to little too late. The car had over 400k miles on it.

    thanks

any kind of oil,is better than no oil,ur motor may have ran out of oil before, and caused ur,bottom end damage. Can old oil, or mixing oil viscosities have the same effect as no oil on an engine? (throwing a rod bearing)?
I'm sure it was on it's way out and adding the oil was coincidental to it's timely demise.
That's alot of miles, but not for a diesal . I don't know if you know that a diesal takes a difforent motor oil then cars do. if you put the wrong oil in it that was the problem.
400K miles is alot, even for a diesel that size. Mixing viscosities wont hurt it at all, and neither will adding fresh oil to old oil. Your engine just worn out, bit the dust.
I don't think that mixing the oil had anything to do with it.

Why do auto manufacturers recomend using diff.viscosities of engine oil in cold and hot climates?

Thinner oil is easier to start in extreme cold temperatures. It flows to parts quicker. A multi-grade oil will start off low and get thicker as it warms up.

How is the right viscosity achieved in motor oils?

A general answer is that oil is a long chain hydrocarbon. When the oil comes up out of the well it can have a lot of different properties depending on the geology of the site. The oil has to be processed to make kerosene, gasoline, motor oil and other substances. The chemical plants that do this are complicated, and the process takes a long time.

If the chemical engineer wants a certain type of motor oil this is done through refining and distilling the petroleum. One of the most interesting parts of this process is called ';cracking'; the long chain of hydrocarbons so that it burns faster and cleaner. The whole process involves a lot of mathematics and computers. As far as industrial processes go, refining petroleum is one of the most complicated tasks.

I'd like to ask for the viscosity, volatility and density of Dill Oil/Huile Oil...tenx.?

This question is difficult to answer directly, as manufacturing processes produce a variety of viscosities and so on. It seems like a typical density is 0.91 g/cc, and its viscosity is usually described as 'watery', so that probably puts it in the neighborhood of linseed oil at 0.28 P. Hope that helps!

  • Are there any adverse effects to mixing engine oil brands/viscosities?

i own a repair shop, and in case of an emergency its not bad to have to do this ,but it wont kill the engine, oil will mix together, its not like its going to separate inside the engine, but it is a good idea to try and stay with the right weight of oil, brand name isn't that important, but the weight of it does affect the viscosity of it,but your not going to kill if you add the wrong weight to it,all oils will mix ,other wise there would be lot of blown up engines out there right now,you should be ok as long as you change it at least every 3 thousand, good luck,i hope this helps. Are there any adverse effects to mixing engine oil brands/viscosities?
yes, just use one brand. Using different viscosities will probably not be good for the engine with different pressures in different areasAre there any adverse effects to mixing engine oil brands/viscosities?
The effect is cumulative, but if you mix grades, it's likely that one will dilute the other, which will cause thermal breakdown faster. I tried it once, and had to replace the engine a year later. (Surprised the **** out of me, I might add...)
I HAVE BEEN MIXING SYNTEC WITH NORMAL OIL FOR YEARS IT WONT HARM THE CAR AT ALL I'M A MECAHNIC FOR 13 PLUS YEARS
I'd say stick with the same viscosity. Brand wouldn't really matter because where does most oil come from? That's right, middle east. But if you are in an emergency, mixing wouldnt do more harm.
In most cases your vehicle will never know if you mix brands of oil.

Mixing viscosities may ';average'; their properties, but I would recommend sticking to whatever your manufacturer specifies for your vehicle to prevent adverse effects.

Having the proper oil level is the most critical. Clean oil is preferable to any dirty oil. Viscosity is probably more important than the brand of oil. Almost every brand of oil that you can buy today is of good quality.

Brand, viscosity and type of Motor oil, does it mater all that much if you change at half Man. intervals?

VW recommends I use castrol 5w-40 syntec and change at 10k mile intervals. I have some free Mobil 1 5w-30 that is not VW recommended. What if any difference would it make? kinematic viscosity units are centistokes (cST)

There is a publication at the following website:

    http://www.terratherm.com/company/SOQ.pd鈥?/a>

on page 8 of the document SOQ.pdf there is a graph of viscosity vs temp for various oils, reading the graph for SAE 30 oil at 60 degrees F gives the value 340. Reading the graph for SAE 30 oil at 212 F gives the value of 10.

The SAE specification for SAE 30 oil is 9.3-12.5 cST @ 100 C (212 F) use midpoint number: 10.9 cST @ 212 F, so this corresponds with the value in the graph on page 8 of the above document.

So the viscosity of SAE 30 oil at 60 F is about 340 cST.

here's a good description of choosing viscosity of lubricating oil for automotive engines:

Question on viscosity of motor oil.?

    Ok i have a 2000 ford f-150 with the 5.4 v8.

the owner's manual suggests 5w-30, while hayne's automotive manual states 5w-20. Could using 5w-20 damage my truck?Question on viscosity of motor oil.?
im a ford technician. we always use the ford recommended viscosity. in this case its 5w30, 5w20 is used on newer engines. nothing will happen if you use 5w30 but i dont see why you would want to change the viscosity.

just use what ford recommends.Question on viscosity of motor oil.?
It won't hurt your truck, but make sure to check the oil cap on your engine, on my F150 it tells me which viscosity to use, yours may well be the same. But for what it's worth I would go with the owner's manual.

Ford wrote it, and I would trust them more than a 3rd party like Haynes, not that I'm knocking them, I love their manuals.
Viscosity refers to resistance to flow, When it is warm it will flow faster than when it is cold. 5W30 is a thicker oil than 5W20. The W stands for winter so that it is 5 hot and 30 cold. The 5W30 is the better oil.

Depending on where you live Hot climate as opposed to Cold climate.
I like to use.....Castrol GTX High Mileage Oil.....in engines as such.

No the 5W-20W will not damage anything. U may find it actually burns off a little faster between oil changes.

I like this Castrol for that reason.

    http://www.castrol.com select...United States....if that is where U live..
These numbers are suggestions for likely conditions. Unless you are going to spend a lot of time in a high temperature environment, when you would be better off with the 5W-30, it really does not matter too much. In principle I would stay with manufacturer's recommendations.
While there isn't a huge difference in the multi weight viscosity, going to a thinner oil is always a risk...I would stick to 5w30 or better...

Viscosity indicates the ability to flow, the higher the viscosity number the slower is the flow rate and the oil is thicker. Automobile engines need fast slow rates on cold winter mornings to minimize wear due to friction.
It depends. Mechanical wristwatch oil is watery. Differential gear oil in your car is very thick. Crankcase oil changes viscosity with temperature.

check your owners manual but i believe 5w30 is correct oil all year for that vehicle, mitsubishi has lifter problems and they did a cleaning with 0w30 oil at higher (2000 rpms) for 20 mins or so and then drain and refill with proper oil, might want to consider this if 5w30 isn't the answer. oil filter drain back is a problem with some filters make sure your purchasing oil filters with anti drain back valves installed, fram is the worst for this.

yes, same viscosity as is recommended in manual
Yes, same viscosity that your engine recommends.
Yes you can, that engine uses 5W-30.
Yep, I agree, with the other answer too. Same viscosity, and yes, you can use synthetic
I agree with one before me in the fact that why bother. Synthetic oil is very expensive and you will see no real benefit using it. I would only run synthetic if it was called for to cover the warranty.ie.. corvette. Save your money and use a good quality oil. But to answer your question yes you can switch.
yeah synthetic is also better for your engine in most cases
Why bother? Your oil changes are going to go up by 50 bucks and theres a chance that the motor will smoke if the cylinder walls are anywhere near glazed. Synthetic oil just lasts longer. Oil is oil, get the cheap slippery kind and change it more often if youre that worried about your engine.

I dont recommend synthetic oil in an engine unless it was started on synthetic oil. Go to the mobil 1 website for a bunch of reasons why the biggest corporation in america thinks you should use their overpriced lubricant.

Why is motor oil sold in different viscosities?

I looked it up, and I don't quite understand. If you could break it down, that would be great. I need it for homework. Why is motor oil sold in different viscosities?
As oil cools down it gets thicker and when it heats up it gets thinner. When oil gets too thick to go between parts it should be lubricating there is no lubrication. This is why in the old days you put 10 or 20 weight oil in a car up north during the winter and 30 or 40 weight oil in the car down south in the summer. In modern times they have multi-viscosity oil. 5 w-30 means it will flow like 5 weight oil and protect like 30 weight oil. That means it will get into all the places it needs to in cold weather and still protect in the warm weather too. An added benefit is it reduces waisted energy needed to move heavier oil when it isn't needed. Why is motor oil sold in different viscosities?
because it can be used for different cars

Does temperature affect the viscosity of oil?

Why is it thinner when it's hot.. and vice versa.

Explain what happens to the particles etc.

THANKS!!Does temperature affect the viscosity of oil? If so how?
If 渭 is the dynamic viscosity of the liquid or gas and T is the temperature, the following holds true:

    Gases:

    渭 ~ T^(3/4)

    Viscosity increases as temperature increases.

    Liquids:

    渭 ~ (A - B ln(T))

    Viscosity decreases as temperature increases.

Oil is a liquid, so its viscosity will decreases as the temperature goes up. This is due the more energetic motion of the oil molecules, making bonds between molecules harder to form. Fewer bonds means the molecules slide past each other more easily.Does temperature affect the viscosity of oil? If so how?
I have read a lot of your answers which would seem true. Sorry they are not totally correct. ever hear of multi grade oils like 5W40 this motor oil is thinner when cold and thicker when hot.. Viscosity is the molecular size of the oil particles. when cold it constricts and when hot it expands in size.
It most definitely does. Hydrogen bonds between the oil molecules are more easily broken if there is thermal energy, i.e. the oil is hot.
I would assume that it'd be thinner when it's hot and thicker when it's cold, just because that's how temperature effects most other mediums.
It's how temperature affects liquids, gases and solids. As the temperature drops the molecules become less active and crowd closer together. Add heat and they vibrate-become more active- and move farther apart.

What is the viscosity I should use?Pag oil nd 8 is what viscosity? for toyota supra 1986?
I would recommend the 100 weight. The nd 8 is just a Toyota name. You'll be just fine with the 100, it's what I use for all ac work at the shop.Pag oil nd 8 is what viscosity? for toyota supra 1986?
Viscosity is just another word for 'how liquid something is'. The more viscous an oil or other substance is, the more it will act like water (thin and runny). On the other extreme, something that has a low viscosity is a rock. Or your engine. Doesn't act very much like water. Can't get a rock to flow out of a cup.... you get the picture. The reason an oil needs to be the right viscosity, is so that it doesn't run too thin for your application (and thus not providing enough protection) or too thick to move easily through your engine to provide protection (low viscosity). Every engine and oil delivery combo will differ, hence the different weights of oil. And Mtech is correct, the 100 will do just fine.

What is the viscosity and density of virgin coconut oil?

All cooking oils (vegetable, coconut, etc) are roughly the same density : ~900 kg/m^3.

For example, coconut oil is about 925 kg/m^3, olive 920, vegetable b/w 900 and 930. Also, coconut oil viscosity is 28.58 mm^2/s.

I am wondering how to find the dinamic viscosity of vegetable oil.?

I think you're going to need a machine to measure it for you, something like a rotary viscometer.

Does an oil's viscosity change over time?

if so how long does it take.Does an oil's viscosity change over time?
    Depends on what you mean.

Does an oil's viscosity change over time when used (for example, in an engine or gearbox)? Yes - although the changes aren't necessarily predictable. Theoretically, as oil is used in an engine it will oxidise and the oil will thicken, it will also pick-up carbon from the fuel combustion and will thicken, and the engine will ';boil off'; light ends in the oil causing it to thicken. However the oil can also absorb unburned fuel which can - in the short term - cause viscosity loss. Also, if the oil is a multigrade oil with polymeric viscosity improvers the engine can ';shear'; the VI improver and thin the oil. So, an engine oil's viscosity in use is dependant on a balance of these effects and is, therefor, dependent on its chemistry, the engine's mechanical condition, running conditions, fuel type, etc.

Gear oils are a little easier to predict - they will thicken over time in use as the oil oxidises. VI improvers are normally not present and don't interfere.

If, OTOH you are asking whether the viscosity of an oil stored in a bottle or drum will change the answer is ';no'; - not in any way that will make a diffence to its use. You could store a gear oil or engine oil for 20 years and not see a substantial change - the oil may oxidise a little bit but the effect on viscosity will be negligable and, in all liklihood, the oil will have antioxidants added to it to block the oxidation anyway.Does an oil's viscosity change over time?
yes as it wears down and gas and dirt are absorbed into it...like in a car engine..
Oil when heated will become less viscous. dirt will make it more viscous. On its own, oil viscosity will not change with time. VIscosity is NOT a function of time.
yes as it gets worn it breaks down and doesn't do what it was intended to do....protect thats why you should always change oil in your car or truck after so many miles
in a motor the heat and the moisture that is moving through the environment make it change quicker
The short answer is yes, it does change. As to how long it takes, that depends on how much change you want to see.

depends do you live in the north or south, in the north you want a lower viscosity, there are alot of veritables in engine types that you should use ,in the south u can use a heaver type , and by the way THE W stands for winter not weight, low mileage id use moble 1,check with agood mech
5w30 is recomended for both 4 cylinder engine's as well as 6 cylinder's but 10w30 would be ok..there's not a whole lot of difference between the two..just that 5w30 can withstand more heat..i have used both in my 6 cylinder's and both seem to work well..maybe if you used 5w30 in summer and 10w30 in winter . would be ok
5W30 I what I use in all of my Fords.

    Do oil people measure viscosity?

NEED HELP for my research paper.. so if u could please answer so i can continue this paper it's due friday...Do oil people measure viscosity?
To produce oil products, the oil companies have to transport crude and other components through pipes, filters, headers, valves and many other pieces of equipment. In order to do this efficiently, the viscosity of the different fluids must be known. Knowing the viscosity is critical in determining the correct horsepower for the pumps and compressors used in these fluid transport processes.Do oil people measure viscosity?
    yes

I have a 94 crown vic ,burns a qt. of oil weekly, any sugg. on treatment or viscosity i should run?

the car runs great ,but it's got a ton of mileage , easily 200,000 the odo has been broken for years.I have a 94 crown vic ,burns a qt. of oil weekly, any sugg. on treatment or viscosity i should run?
change the gaskets and use 50 weight oil its thicker than normalI have a 94 crown vic ,burns a qt. of oil weekly, any sugg. on treatment or viscosity i should run?
is it burning the oil or leaking it
If it's burning a quart of oil a week, as seen by blue smoke where ever you go, it's not running great. If it's leaking that much, find out where it's leaking and change the gasket to stop it.

If it is burning it, with that many miles it probably wouldn't pay to try to fix it.
wow thats horrible....okay...dont up the viscocity until you know its NOT burning the oil. you up the vis and its burning oil you better start car shopping! check your gaskets and valves/rings for a leak but dont up it until you're sure
My grandad used a 15/40 Deisel oil when his farm trucks started to smoke he would add 1 quart to every 5 quarts of regular engine oil they did'nt smoke as much but he would use a truck until it quit if you are not planning to use your car till it stops you may want to go another route.

    How?

Does temperature affect the viscosity of oil?

Why is it thinner when it's hot.. and vice versa.

Explain what happens to the particles etc.

THANKS!!Does temperature affect the viscosity of oil? If so how?
resistance of a fluid to flow. This resistance acts against the motion of any solid object through the fluid and also against motion of the fluid itself past stationary obstacles. Viscosity also acts internally on the fluid between slower and faster moving adjacent layers.Does temperature affect the viscosity of oil? If so how?
The thermal energy in the fluid is higher when it's at a higher temperature (duh!). The molecules are more excited in this state of higher temperature (thermal energy) and have less resistance to flow/movement.
Yes. If your motor oil is at 0 degrees Fahrenheit, your car will barely start, if at all. When the Temperature is 50 degrees F. , it will start easily.

  • What is the effect of wear on viscosity flash point, fire point of gear oil?

if we are using a four wheeler then what will be the effect of wear on the viscosity and flash point and fire point of the gear oil.whether these will increase or decrease with increasing wearWhat is the effect of wear on viscosity flash point, fire point of gear oil?
The viscosity of your base oil never changes. What does change and wear out is the additives in the oil which prevent foaming, rust and resist pressures from loads. These additives break down and wear out. If you run your gear oil too long or too hot then your mechanical components will wear out.

Flash point might be affected as the additives become depleted. If you are worried about flash points then a synthetic gear oil is your best choice and I would not consider using a petroleum based product.

Gear oils made for racing purposes offer vastly superior protection than every day conventional products

Single versus multi viscosity gear oil?

my rav4 states that I should use a single viscosity gear oil (SAE90) for my transfer case %26amp; rear differential. while for the transmission oil it recommends a multi-viscosity oil (75W-90).

question, can I use the multi-viscosity oil (75W-90) for the SAE90 requirement of my transfer case %26amp; rear differential? would this be too thin?

thanksSingle versus multi viscosity gear oil?
Best to follow manufacturer's recommendations on this. Most likely they came up with the oil weights after long term tests to determine best longevity of the components. It will probably work fine running 75-90 in both for the short term but it may shorten the life of the transfer case and diff. Talk to a Toyota mechanic to be sure though.Single versus multi viscosity gear oil?
stick with the 90 and 75/90 as it tells you. The 75/90 will let your tranny shift easier in extreme cold weather. There is no reason to have multi. vis. in rear end %26amp; transfer.

As to how long it takes, that depends on how much change you want to see.

look at your owners manual most of them show a graph

i always protect from heat as the cold start up is only a minute or so look at what temp the highest temp you anticipate before your next change and use that oil

i ruined an engine on a vw rabbit water cooled engine i took advice from a oil expert and added 10w 30 oil it cooked in about 1 month as the oil broke down the outside temp was in the upper 90's the owners Manuel stated 10w30 shouldn't be used above 75

i always protect for heat now i use 15w 40 oil year round i idle the engine for a minute on cold mornings to get things warmed upDo cars in the summer need thicker motor oil? Please answer, I need this info for my sci. project on viscosity
Grab almost any owners manual and look in the customer data area there will be a thermometer illustrated there with viscosity chart showing -35 degrees 0wt-, 5wt-30 at the bottom and and as temp averages go up slightly heavier oil at 100 degrees 10wt-40. 15wt-50 and so on. In the artic -60 degrees they do not turn off engines because they will not restart. Super cold temps need oil that won't freeze solid and still flow.
    Yes they do.

In the winter I put 5W-30 in my miata and 10W-30 in the summer. Yes thicker oil is recomended in the hotter temperatures.
I would have to say no. All cars run at a constant temperature when the car is fully warmed up. (160-190) So it wouldn't matter on the viscosity. Now if you are talking about an air cooled engine yes it would matter. Air cooled engines use outside air to cool the oil to keep the engine from overheating.
With the multi-viscosity oils that we have today no you do not need to, but the simple answer to your question is yes they do.
Decades ago, yes. Today most vehicle manufacturers recommend the same weight of oil all-year round with the most common being 5W30 and 5W20.
The oil needs to have less resistance to flow at colder temps. Oil has to flow and during the winter the wrong grade oil can keep an engine from starting.

But as the engine warms up (and the oil also) because of chemistry it has a greater chance of failing.

So multi-grade oils were developed to provide the protection an engine needs when hot while not interfering with ability to turn over when cold,
    yes,they do

Oil i would use 5W30 if it is cool to cold where you are, or if its hot where you are, i would use 10W30, as for the coolant, that vehicle calls for DexCool. Do not mix coolant types. Dexcool is a redish colour. The resivor will have a cap that had either red or green writing on it, if it is red, use DexCool, if it is green, use the regular ethaline glycol. What is the best oil viscosity for 95 silverado 5.7? also what grade coolant should i be looking for?
If the engine has over 50,000 miles on it use a good quality 10w30 in the winter and 10w40 in the summer. Over about 125,000 I'd use a good 20w50 in the summer for extended daily temps over 90-95 deg.

As far as coolant...Dex-Cool is in the process of settling lawsuits for cooling system and engine damages! This stuff clogs cooling systems-period! Use regular antifreeze. Its cheaper and despite what some people will tell you it will not harm your engine or any seals-period! The water pump has the same seals as pre-dexcool water pump seals-period!

5W30 when it is cold.... the winter.... and 10W30 in the summer or warm to hot weather. As for coolant I just regular prestone 50/50.

    Nascar engine oil viscosity?

Just wondered if anyone knows what ';weight viscosity'; the nascar cars use for motor oil? And any particular brand?Nascar engine oil viscosity?
Multigrading is not critical for racing as the engines are warmed up carefully. They probably run a 5 or 0 weight to minimise drag on the crankshaft. Oil temperature is precisely controlled with a thermostat and cooler assemblyNascar engine oil viscosity?
I have read that some of the teams use Mobil 1 0W-30 with Sypersyn. And then they will use the same or 15W-50 for the race. But that differs with each team. This is what Penske runs.
Well it depends on weather track and point in the race schedule. Extremely cold we will run 5 weight oil under normal conditions we will run 000weight for qualifying but now with the impound rule we run 0 weight.

In terms of viscosity,, explain why water and oil dont blend ?

I know that its mainly because separating from each other is thermodynamically more stable than mixing with each other.

But how can you explain this phenomenon in terms of viscosity??In terms of viscosity,, explain why water and oil dont blend ?
We don't really talk about viscosity to explain why water and oil don't blend, perhaps a more suitable term would be density. Water is denser than oil hence oil floats on water. Another important point is water is polar while oil is non-polar and hydrophobic, therefore they don't have much interactions and mix with each other. In terms of viscosity,, explain why water and oil dont blend ?
The blending of water and oil has nothing to do with viscosity actually.

viscosity is defined as the friction within a liquid.

This is a polarity problem - Water is highly polar and oils are non polar. (oils are triglycerides and do not have any polar bonds)

As only polar compounds dissolve in polar and non polar in non polar, Oils and water do not mix.
Viscosity has absolutely no bearing on the non- blending of oil and water. Therfore it is impossible to explain why water and oil dont blend , in terms of viscosity.

if it's unopened and kept inside, 10 years +.

if it's stored in a shed with hot summers, 4 years. How long can car oil be stored before it losses its viscosity?
As long as you want, oil never wears out, or looses its viscosity from the low heat in the summer in a shed.

    Using higher viscosity oil?

Ive read somewhere that using a higher viscosity oil will give me a longer engine life. My 04 civic runs on 5w20 and i was thinking of goin to maybe 5w40. Anybody know anything about this?Using higher viscosity oil?
Lubricity is the name of the game.....more oil flowing past your bearing will carry off more heat and actually provide you with the more lubricity you desire.... a higher viscosity/thicker

oil will decrease the amount of flow for the design of the engine in your car...the tolerances will be much tighter than in a race engine and a heavier oil will actualy decrease oil flow to the bearings in your honda...Using higher viscosity oil?
under warranty stay with the 5/20 - thinner it is the easier it is to pump -better gas milage etc i have run 3w50 in my racecars in qualifying -but not in a race
ill bet in the back window, you see the symbol ULEV, right? as soom as you go to a thicker oil, you increase the amount of work that the engine has to do, and the amount of gas that it is going to use. those engines are built pretty well. the 520 is your best bet, and i would stick with that until you start consuming to much oil more than a quart in 3000 miles.
No...don't go to the higher viscosity oil. The 5/20 works just fine during normal everyday use. Unless you consistently operate your car at very high duty cycles (and I mean like driving the BAJA 1000 every day 24/7) you will end up doing MORE damage to your car by using the higher visc oil. MOST of the damage is done to your engine at startup and during the first 5 minutes or so of operation. The oil is cold, hard to pump and not sticking to surfaces very well. Even hot summer days in stop and go traffic won't cause as much wear as having too THICK an oil. It gets technical from here.

Multi viscosity oils work like this: Polymers are added to a light base(5W, 10W, 20W), which prevent the oil from thinning as much as it warms up. At cold temperatures the polymers are coiled up and allow the oil to flow as their low numbers indicate. As the oil warms up the polymers begin to unwind into long chains that prevent the oil from thinning as much as it normally would. The result is that at 100 degrees C ( 212 F) the oil has thinned only as much as the higher viscosity number indicates. Another way of looking at multi-vis oils is to think of a 20W-50 as a 20 weight oil that will not thin more than a 50 weight would when hot.

Multi viscosity oils are one of the great improvements in oils, but they should be chosen wisely. Always use a multi grade with the narrowest span of viscosity that is appropriate for the temperatures you are going to encounter. In the winter base your decision on the lowest temperature you will encounter, in the summer, the highest temperature you expect. The polymers can shear and burn forming deposits that can cause ring sticking and other problems. 10W-40 and 5W-30 require a lot of polymers(synthetics excluded) to achieve that range. This has caused problems in diesel engines (Note: 18 wheeler trucks use 15w40 oil in thier engines and those are mostly 14liter 500 HP powerplants that run nearly 24/7 coast to coast thru all kinds of weather and terrain weighing 80,000 pounds), but fewer polymers are better for all engines. The wide viscosity range oils, in general, are more prone to viscosity and thermal breakdown due to the high polymer content. It is the oil that lubricates, not the additives. Oils that can do their job with the fewest additives are the best.

So...if your car manufacturer sez use 5w20 then use it.
the only reason to go with a higher viscosity is to maintain oil pressure if the bearing clearances are too large. otherwise, use what the manufacturer recommends because your engine has been engineered to use that oil. thicker oil will reduce your gas mileage at the least and damage your engine at worst, especially during cold weather starts
i own a repair shop and and i wouldn't go that high with it right now, i tell you the one thing that will make it last real good is change it to a synthetic oil like 5-w-30 Mobil one ,its probably the best oil right now on the market ,they invented synthetic oil ,and i use it in everything i own as do my customers ,and i highly recommend it to anyone who wants their car to last a real long time, you can stay with 5-w-30 year round in it also, and that makes it easy to remember, but you can run like 7-10 thousand miles on this stuff,i go around 9-10 thousand on change myself, and it does really good, but it might be something to think about, its probably the best thing you,ll ever do for your car, good luck hope this helps.
its ok to run it.it will be better in the hot weather,it wont break down as easy, but when winter comes, switch over to a lighter oil.

Does temperature affect the viscosity of oil?

Explain what happens to the particles etc.

THANKS!!Does temperature affect the viscosity of oil? If so how?
Increased temperatures, cause any liquid, such as oil, to heat. In molecules, heat speeds up the movement of electrons around their nucleus. This causes water to boil and to evaporate; in oil, it increases the oil's viscosity, causing it to become thinner and more runny. When oil is cool, for example in cold weather, the molecules move more slowly, which causes oil's viscosity to thicken or to become congealed or thicker.Does temperature affect the viscosity of oil? If so how?
Yes it does, my friend did that for his science fair. Im not gonna tell you though, you figure it out.
Yes temperature affects all liquids by increasing the speed of molecules, and...do your own homework, :).

I don't worry about the brand as long as it meets the specification for the engine. The API spec will be listed on the container.

Viscosity? Multi-viscosity oils are probably better than years ago with the additive package lasting longer. But as the miles pile up, the viscosity range diminishes and eventually it鈥檚 a straight weight. 10W30 is probably the best all around; 10W40 if it鈥檚 really hot. But the more you try to stretch the viscosity the more problematic it becomes. 5W30 or 5W40 are used by OEMs for certification because they think they get better mileage during start up. But good lubricity just isn鈥檛 there.Car Mechanics: Your favorite motor oil and why. What viscosity do you use?

  • I have a question about Oil viscosity?

I work as a miller. While reading the embossed brass badge on a very old mill I came across this description for what oil to use in the worm drive.

It says, ';Use a compounded steam cylinder oil containing 5-10% acid-less tallow and having a viscosity of 150 seconds saybolt universal at 210 degrees F';.

I known Tallow is a rendered form of beef or mutton fat, processed from suet.

I know Viscosity is a measure of the resistance of a fluid which is being deformed by either shear stress or extensional stress.

***I don't know what the unit ';saybolt'; is referring to @210 F.

Can you Help?I have a question about Oil viscosity?
I the Saybolt viscosity system is old and has been overtaken by the Brookfield viscometer.

The Saybolt Universal Viscosimeter measures kinematic viscosity by measuring the time it takes for a sample to pass through an orifice. In this case, 150 seconds at 210 deg. F.

You need to convert this to centistokes. My table from Cranes has it about 37 centistokes.

I think here i may have a few problems, first, my oil reserve spewed oil like no other but when i took my oil filter off nothing really came out. Normal? I was told because it's an older car, there is more wear and leaks i should perhaps switch to a higher viscosity (5W-30 to 10W-30). Especially in the summer. Now the manual says 5W is preferred but 10W was also mentioned an alternative. Is this okay? Then I made the mistake of buying 10-40 (1 quart) and people told me it was okay to mix it in just as long as it was diluted by the other oil. ??? I guess my overall question is, is my car going to blow up and should i re-do my oil change and put 5W back in. Over the next few days ill only be driving 10-15 miles overall so im assuming ill be okay with these shorter distances. Help me out!I changed my oil viscosity good or bad?
your oil will be fine....but no oil in the oil filter is bad. That tells me that you don't change your oil very often....there is a bypass so when the filter stops up...oil will still circulate....change your oil more,if you want to thicken your oil...use stp or something ....with the oil the manufacturer suggests...good luckI changed my oil viscosity good or bad?
If the manual says you can use the higher viscosity than it is probably ok. Do not use any oil not recommended by the manual, and do not mix in the 10w-40.

Thicker than recommended oil can cause oil not to reach critical areas in your engine. Your engine could seize up.

If it's leaking, have the leaks repaired.
You can't go wrong drain all the old oil and replacing it totally with new oil of suitable viscosity. By the way, leaks have nothing to do with viscosity. Once your oil pan or some other area of the engine's lubricating casing is leaking, changing oil viscosity will not help and you will constantly lose oil pressure and have to tap up often. Get the leak fixed first
Don't worry. The low number on multiweight oils refers to the viscosity at low temperatures. So being that its summer it won't make any difference between 5w-30 and 10w-30.
Some oil filters will drain the oil back out after the engine is shut off, some have an anti drain back valve built in, so it may be normal not to see a large amount of oil pour out, usually some oil will be present any way. You didn't complain of any noises or issues so I assume the engine is running normal.

I wouldn't worry too much if you just used one quart, and you could safely use 10W30 at your next oil change, 5W30, and 5W20 oils are light duty oils that manufacturers use primarily to get a slight improvement on there fuel mileage certifications,

IMO the oil is too light for most applications, unless you have a new vehicle with lots of design characteristics that require immediate lube and have issues with heaver weights of oils, like 15W40 or 20W50,

What would happen to the viscosity of your car's egine oil durng cold winter months. Could this harm your car?

big time, maybe not where u live but it gets to -40 celcius where i do. we plug our cars in, they have block heaters that keep your engine warm.

basically the engine oil gets thick and will take a few minutes to warm up so it can properly lubricate your engine. meanwhile metal on metal parts are wearing against eachother without lube, such as pistons to the cylinders quickly loosing engine compression

check if you have a block heater, i read you should plug in at 20 f, or -7 deg celcius.

take a container of the oil you put in your car , and let it sit overnight in winter, examine how thick it is after ;)What would happen to the viscosity of your car's egine oil durng cold winter months. Could this harm your car?
During the cold winter months, the viscosity of the oil will thicken. For example a 10w30 maybe more like 10w40 or 5w30 like 10w30. If you don't have the proper viscosity for your engine (especially if is thicker) it won't be able to properly lube your engine Honestly, depnding on where you live this could not be a big deal (if you're living in an area where the tempature doesn't really change a lot during winter). If you live in a place where the winter get freezing and below it could do some real damage. For example: if the piston is not properly lubrcated it will get really hot, hot enough to weld itself to the cyclinder cause your moter to freeze therefor you have to replace a moter all because you didn't have the proper visocity. That would not be cool.

Check your manual or a local Auto parts store for the proper viscosity for your vehicle for warm tempatures and cold tematures as well. ;-)What would happen to the viscosity of your car's egine oil durng cold winter months. Could this harm your car?
Engine oil of different viscosity is suitable for usage with different ambient temperature

Engine oil with multi-grades viscosity allows usage over a wider range of ambient temperatures (usually more costly)

Engine lubrication failure can happen during winter months if the engine oil becomes too thick to be pumped for lubricating the engine. The engine would not starts, or siezed up soon after starting often with broken connecting rod(s), Piston(s), cylinder(s), main bearings, are sometimes damaged too
Oil's viscosity does not change... unless it is a multigrade. Most are.

Just ensure you have the oil that the manufacturer recommends, to suit the local driving conditions.

Oil is naturally ';thicker'; when cold. Unless it freezes, so long as it allows the engine to crank and start, it should be fine.
always consult your owners manual, cold makes oil thicker so some people switch to a lighter viscosity during the winter months this makes the car easier to start mostly, you should let your car warm up before you start to drive in any climate
It gets thicker that's why they make multi viscosity oil like 5W-20 and such. when it's cold it acts like a 5 wt warm it's like a 20 wt. Make sense.

Effects of temperature on viscosity of oil.?

how to do a science fair expirement with that topic?Effects of temperature on viscosity of oil.?
Boring project. Just bring a stick of butter and demonstrate that it will melt on a warm day if you put it in the sunshine.Effects of temperature on viscosity of oil.?
Depends on the oil. Motor oil actually acts opposite natural oil. It gets thinner with cold temperatures so it will flow better, and thicker when it's hot so it will protect better.
I guess u could demonstrate how oil works in engines and then experiment with each oil type...ie(10-w30) or (5w-30) and then the effect each oil type has on an engine during a given environment. Certain viscosities are better for warm or cold weather.

As far as an expeiment is concerned, I really cant tell you what to do..be creative!

  • Type of Oil Viscosity to use for a SAAB 2005?

when i went to pepboys to buy synthetic oil, i was told i had to use 0w-30 oil. however, in my car manual, it states exactly: For best function Saab recommends:

    For gasoline engines:

SAE 0W-30, SAE 5W-30 or SAE 0W-40 engine oil.

so does that mean i can use any one of those three? i have a saab '05 9-3 and this will be my first oil change since purchasing this car. any help is much appreciated.Type of Oil Viscosity to use for a SAAB 2005?
go with the 5w-30 as thats what almost all new cars use.Type of Oil Viscosity to use for a SAAB 2005?
The weight recommended by mfg. depends on ambient temp. The lower the temp. the lighter/thinner the oil you should use. So for a fairly new vehicle 5W-30 should be just fine, especially if full synthetic. if not below 0F.
I found this in 2 minutes by searching. Take whatever you're told here with a big grain of salt.

I put a different viscosity oil on my car than the one it had can this affect it?

i put a quart of 20w-50 oil on my car and the one in the engine is either 10w-30 or 10w-40. can this make a difference on how the oil rises up to the engine and does it become thicker? what happensI put a different viscosity oil on my car than the one it had can this affect it?
Crap happens I know all about it, 1 qt. will change the viscosity some. If you live in a warm climate I wouldn't loose a whole lot of sleep over it.I put a different viscosity oil on my car than the one it had can this affect it?
Absolutely nothing. All oil is compatible with one another even to mix synthetic and regular oils. In the winter time your choice may cause a problem, but even then it is just one quart. It will be fine till your next oil change, so don't sweat it. BTW the manufactures recommendations are just suggestions. Any oil that you buy in an auto parts store or even a supermarket will be just fine. It is more important to keep your oil topped off than what kind of oil you put in.
That was a bad idea. You should ALWAYS stick to the factory specs. Thicker oil will not get into small cracks to lube well.

Switch back soon. Oil is cheap.

    Regarding 5w30 oil viscosity?

5w30 oil would start/crank at the 5 viscosity index, during the first 15/20 minutes, as the heat activated viscosity modifiers transform the viscosity index to 30 at the full operating temp, does the engine essentially operate at progressively higher viscosity indexes until it reaches the 30 viscosity index, ie does the oil work its way from 5 to 6 to 7 to 8 etc. etc. until it reaches the designed 30 viscosity index, said another way, would the 5w30 oil be ';transformed lenearly'; beginning at a viscosity index of 5 and ending at a viscosity index of 30, and if this is true it would mean that a lot of people are doing a lot of driving on oil that has not been totally transformed to it full viscosity index? a mechanical engineer i know here in san antonio used to batch test the synthetic oil used by southwest airlines planes and he knows a lot about oil and he really tried to answer but could not. appologize if confusing, thanksRegarding 5w30 oil viscosity?

    Best Oil Viscosity for B18A?

I have a 1991 B18a1, and the previous owner ran 20W50 Castrol Syntec Synthetic Blend. Everybody told me it was way too heavy, So then I started running 10W30 Castrol Syntec Full Synthetic oil. It ran nice but it burns it up quicker and I was wondering if I should move up to like 20W40 or something around there. I recently heard people use heavier oils in B series motors that rev high. What should I use? The motor has 114,000 on it

it tends to burn up when i drive at a constant rate of 120 or more for an extended period of time

I think I'm going to stay with castrol syntec, its the best oil i've ever used so far. The car drives really well with it. I'm just questioning the type of viscosities and what I should use. I think 20w50 was too heavy, but for a B series, 10w30 is too light, burns up to quickly

    Best Oil Viscosity for B18A?
whoa, first off all your car shouldnt burn oil at all.

Ive heard of people using heavier weight oil like 20w50 when a car burns oil or has alot of mileage.

but 5-30 is best but with some miles like yours 10-30 is perfect.

not too light or too heavy. have your car checked for compression, your car should burn oil, hondas are notorious for piston rings going out.Best Oil Viscosity for B18A?
Most people are familiar with oil's viscosity ratings. The ';W'; refers to ';winter,'; not ';weight.'; For a B18a1 engine an oil with a viscosity of 5W-30 is preferred for improved fuel economy and year round maintenance and protection. You may use a 10-W-30 viscosity if your are living in a place where the temperature ranges from -5 to 45 degree centigrades

Oil Viscosity - 1990 Ford Mustang?

Just recently bought a Mustang, but without the owner's manual unfortunately. What's the best oil viscosity for it? It's 2.3L ( don't know if that helps at all) and I think 5W20 was mentioned as the best, just not sure. Thanks.Oil Viscosity - 1990 Ford Mustang?
That engine calls for 5W-30 year round, 10W-30 okay to use as well. 5W-20 is too thin to use for all but the coldest conditions.Oil Viscosity - 1990 Ford Mustang?
5w30 is a good all year oil but some people use 10w30 if the engine has some miles on it,the thicker or higher viscosity slows down oil leaks and oil consumption while boosting oil pressure,as far as brand use the brand you trust Castrol is good but Pennzoil,Quaker State,Shell,Citgo,or Cenex are equally good, the biggest difference in them is the dye added for product identification and promotion of product to convince people to buy a particular brand.
The best oil to use for this engine year round is Castrol 5w30. I have rebuilt many of these engines and recommended the owners start using it on a regular basis. Out of the 100's I have rebuilt only 3 have died (due to an irresponsible owner not changing the oil regularly) and the others have more than 250k miles on them.
Personally I would use 10w30 in the summer and 5w20 in the winter if you live in a cold climate.

I would recommend measuring it. See references. The physical properties of oil may change season to season.

The 27 to 30 degrees is a wide range for oil.

    at 40 degrees C it is 40.9.
Just a guess......... but at 80' ';f'; VISCOSITY would be about 60 @ SAE standard.

With SAE's oil viscosity standards, what does 30W-50 mean in terms of centiPoise and degrees Celsius?

Why is calculating viscosity important in the oil industry?

I've got a coursework to hand in and i think I'll get a better grade if I say how finding out the viscosity of oil help solve problems. There is a definite link. Can someone help? Why is calculating viscosity important in the oil industry?
Calculating oil viscosity provides information such as what temeperature the oil needs to be kept in order to maintain flow rates and is usually denoted by the grade of the oil eg., 2 4 6 etc etc.Why is calculating viscosity important in the oil industry?
Viscosity is pretty much the resistance of a liquid to flowing. The viscosity affects the pumping process, it affects the speed of flow and pressure most.

Yes. If a heavier oil is used in the engine other than what the manufacturer specifies it will cause drag on the crankshaft and other moving parts. This will result in decreased fuel efficiency.

    Just about oil viscosity ?

im doin science coursework at school and i have to explain why oil flows faster at higher temperatures

any help?Just about oil viscosity ?
mineral oils have different viscosity at different temperatures, this is called the ';viscosity index';, and it says, the hotter the oil, the ';thinner'; it gets,

    .

the thinner the oil the more it tends to flow. so much so that the oil companys tend at add VI additives to keep the viscosity down when it does get hot (because the thin oil can not take load, = force over area). The perfect oil would keep the same viscosity and be able to handle the same load, at any temperature.

What oil viscosity do I use for my bmw? (what does bmw recommend for my model) I live in CaliforniaOil viscosity for 2002 E46 325i?
Read your owners manual. It will say to use an oil that meets BMW LL-01 spec. I believe the spec is 5W-30 but you can use a 0W-30 as well.

The only motor oils that meet this LL-01 spec are the BMW-brand synthetic oil (from your BMW dealer), Mobil One 0W-40, or Castrol Syntec 0W-30. Using these oils will allow you to go the full length of the BMW service interval, which I think is 10,000 miles between oil changes.

You can use most any 5W-30 oil you want, preferably synthetic, but your oil change interval must be shorter than 10,000 miles.Oil viscosity for 2002 E46 325i?

    Oil viscosity in Chicago?

I have a Honda Civic 2002 with 80,000 miles. I recently had the oil changed. The dealership put in a 5W-20 do you think that's too light for my sometime low temperature here in Chicago at -0 deg. F.? could it harm the engine? I haven't put much milage on it since it was purchased and it doesn't warm up much.Oil viscosity in Chicago?
To clarify something SVT said, ';5W-30'; isn't automatically ';thicker';, he was refering to the second number, 30, which indicates a thicker (more viscous) oil than say 20. The first number (to the left of the W) is the 'winter' viscosity (W doesn't stand for 'weight', it stands for 'winter'), that is the viscosity of the oil when the oil is at the freezing point of water. The second number (after the W) is the 'hot' viscosity of the oil, that is the viscosity of the oil at normal engine temps.

In cold weather , you want a 5W-anything oil...it's the 5 that you care about. In the summer, you care less about the first number, and more about the second.Oil viscosity in Chicago?
5W-20 is fine, I am assuming your engine is in good condition and does not use any oil, you can use 5W-20 all year round in a Honda, especially since you don't drive it much, it flows faster on start up, protecting your engine. You can go with 5W-30 in the summer if you wish. Dont go any heavier in a Honda, these are precision engines with small oil galleries.
that's the right oil for cold weather conditions on any vehicle in the north, the colder it is out side the thinner the oil needs to be so that the engine will turn over good when its cold, the thicker the oil is the slower it will turn over to start when its cold out, when i lived in michigan i ran 5-20 in about everything i owned, good luck.
5-20 is the manufacturer recommended viscosity for your vehicle. perfect for down to -50 degrees.... Plus i seriously recommend you go to some other kind of oil change place. the dealership is ridiculous on oil change prices.
You should should put in a 10/30 in your weather conditions. The dealership put in a lighter cheaper oil so there profit would be higher.Oil has nothing to do with your heating system, check your water level in radiator, then make sure you have a thermostat,or replace it.
That's perfect for your car in cold weather. The lower the number , the thinner the oil. 5W-20 is about as thin as it gets. 5W-30 is thicker, and 10W-30 is thicker yet. See it now ?
5W20 is the factory recommended weight for Honda's. You want thinner oil in the winter time, that's what the 5W part of the oil weight means.
would be just right if its 20 below 5w30 standard and out west 10w40 where its hot most of time great 5w20 sounds great and you know the dealer prices most likely higher than most any other place
    i would go with 5w30

I put 10W30 in a car that takes 5w30. one week later check engine light is on. is it related to oil viscosity?

    Totally unrelated.

The 10W and the 5W of these ratings is how heavy the oil is during the winter. The viscosity is not enough to make very much of a difference, especially if the weather is above freezing when you start your car.

Bring your car to any of the major auto parts stores. Many of them will connect a scan tool to the diagnostic port and extract the trouble code. They will usually do this for free. I've never heard of the wrong oil viscosity throw a code. 10W30 is used for higher temperatures than 5W30, but it really doesn't matter. Most likely your check engine light is on for something completely different.
that should,nt have anything to do with that. check the oil sending unit, you might have the wire off or it could be bad.
    I would seriously doubt it.
I highly doubt it. I'd recommend 10w-30 in any vehicle that isn't going to be seeing snow.

As for oil, I only use 5w30 full synthetic in my 300zx turbo, and Plugs should be NGK. You don't have to Gap the plugs just check to make sure the electrode isn't touching the ground.

    Spark Plug Type

    Standard/Hot Plug NGK PFR5B-11

    Cold Type NGK PFR6B-11B, PFR6B-11

Spark Plug Air Gap 0.039 - 0.043 in

    Spark Plug Torque 14 - 22 ft.lb

If an oil with a viscosity higher than 5W-30 is used during the summer months it should be changed to 5W-30 during the winter months provided that the temperature drops below 50 degrees ~F. For turbocharged engines, 5W-30 should only be used under extremely cold conditions, below - 18~C (0~F).
do you think synthetic oil or manmade oil is better than multipurpose grade oil the only difference is how often you have to change the oil, manmade can go 15000 multi grade 7000 you still pay the same
Use the same weight as the conventional oil recommended by Nissan for that engine in your climate.

I also would recommend an NKG or Bosch Platinum Plug.

    NGK only for spark plugs!!

Reasons for going thinner would be colder temperatures

Reasons for going thicker would be if your car/truck is burning oil

If you don't have any reason to change it, don't.When doing a oil change for your car are u always suposed to keep that same viscosity?
    There is no 5W10.

    There is 5W-20, 5W-30, 10W-30, 10W40, 15W-40, 20W-40, 10W, 20W, 30W and so on.

Many new vehicles call for 5W20.

Your vehicle owners manual will give you one to three alternatives.

You can change viscosity's according to your manual.

NEVER MIX viscosity's in the crankcase.

You can mix brands, (military spec 2105) as long as you keep the same viscosity.

You can change brands as long as it is all the same viscosity.

5W-30 is satisfactory in most every gasoline automotive %26amp; light truck engine.
you can go thicker in the summer and lighter in the winter for the most part.

if the manual says 5w30, i would use That in the winter, and use a step heavier in the summer. It will help with dry starts in the winter (oil is thicker when its cold, therefore more difficult to circulate) And in the summer, it will prevent excessive wear by the oil thinning out too much from the heat. Its not necessary, but some people like to do it. really all depends on where you are. I'm from ct, so it gets real cold in the winter, and real hot in the summer

i personally just use a good synthetic like royal purple. and keep the same viscosity all year.
I think the viscosoty should stay the same but you might need to change it if you move to alaska from florida or vice versa. temperature has something to do with determining which viscosity is best, as well as what type of engine you have. Check with the car's manufacturer.
if it says 5w30 ,in a warmer climate you could go 10w30.

but never higher on the high side.

never go with a lower viscosity on the low side.

generally, your manual will give you a heat chart for viscosity. vs temps.

if your car does not burn it then use the recommended weight an 5w10 is NOT the recommended weight

You can change it, as a car gets older you may want to change it. But once you change the viscosity you should continue to use that same number.
During the warranty period , always use recommended oil and document . Changing weight may not hurt the car , but will give dealer chance to renig on the warranty .
you can but you can also jump up some like 10w30 if you want to. it won,t hurt it. myself i stick with 10w30. 10 weight like you say is just a little too light.
According to the owners manual and/or climate. It might change according to the climate.
Hotter climate, lower number (5-10). colder climate, opposite (30-40). That's all you need to know.
5W10 doesn't sound right to me. Most vehicles it's 5w20 or 5w30. Varies by car manufacturers and years so always check the owners manual.
    always use the recommended weight

I have a 1981 Subaru GL 1.8 liter what kind of motor oil (viscosity)? Does anyone have a good carb for sale?

Google castrol uk or usa for oil grades and qtys.

Why does synthetic oil flow better than conventional oil? (Same viscosity rating)?

Specially on cold days. You take 10w-30 of synthetic and conventional. Leave it out in the garage over a cold night and the synthetic still seems to flow better the next day.

So my question relates to how the oil reacts inside the engine. If the engine is cold, will there be better pressure with conventional oil than synthetic? Or do I have this all mixed uP?Why does synthetic oil flow better than conventional oil? (Same viscosity rating)?
Because a synthetic oil is chemically produced, there are no contaminants in the oil.

By contrast, conventional oils contain small amounts of sulfur, wax, and asphaltic material that can promote detonation as well as varnish and sludge buildup.

With no wax, synthetics will flow at much lower temperatures than conventional oils.

Does anyone know viscosity limitations of a rotary vane pump? I planning to use one for hydraulic oil. Thanks!

I saw a drum pump, Tuthill Fill-Rite FR 300 series and wanted to know if this can be use to pump hydraulic oil or used oil. If it can, does anyone know its viscosity limation for it? Since I remember rotary vane pumps are used for low viscosity fluids such as diesel or gasoline.

Have anyone tried to use a rotary vane pump such as Fill-rite in pumping hydraulic oil or used oil?

Thanks!Does anyone know viscosity limitations of a rotary vane pump? I planning to use one for hydraulic oil. Thanks!
Your best option to find out if your pump will pump hydraulic oil is to contact the manufacturer and see what your pump is designed to pump. I'm not sure this forum is the best place to get an answer to your question.

    I have a 1997 chevy camaro with 124 miles and i was wondering what viscosity oil should i use 10w-40 0r 10w-30

it has 124 plus miles almost 125 miles..I have a 1997 chevy camaro with 124 miles and i was wondering what viscosity oil should i use 10w-40 0r 10w-30
5w-30 has a better viscosity range for your year motor (be it the v-6 or v-8)

You Can use the 10w-30 but its range isn't as broad for your year motor.I have a 1997 chevy camaro with 124 miles and i was wondering what viscosity oil should i use 10w-40 0r 10w-30
Honestly, i would rather use 10w-30 Mobile 1 synthetic oil. It's a lot better than regular oil and you don't have to change it as often. Instead of every 3000 miles, you can actually go 5000 to 6000 miles between oil changes. Plus it protects your engine better and helps extend the life of your engine.
    10w30
    I have a 96 Trans Am with 165k miles...I use 10w30.
10-30....use royal purple it the best

Is motor oil for cars and lawnmowers interchangable if viscosity is the same?

For the most part, yes. Just be sure that the motor oil meets the API designation of the engine you are putting it into. The API spec is a two letter designation, ie SE, SL CI, etc.Is motor oil for cars and lawnmowers interchangable if viscosity is the same?
Oil is oil no matter what engine you put it in, most lawnmowers require just plain 30 weight oil.Is motor oil for cars and lawnmowers interchangable if viscosity is the same?
    motor oil is motor oil
All engines need some kind of a detergent oil..(usually the most widely used for small engines is HD-30, high detergent 30 weight)

Doesn't matter if it has a oil filter or not...don't use detergent oil in a small engine, you'll get sludge even if it doesn't have a filter..

Yes detergent oil holds filth in suspension (dirt, carbon, etc).. why would you want it to settle to the bottom in a small engine?

Yes its pretty much interchangeable.. just don't use ND-30 (non detergent 30 weight) and I'd shy away from 5w-30 conventional in a small engine as it can shear and burn off very easily..

If its a warm climate most of the time.. I'd recommend hd-30 or 15w-40.....(CF and SF rated) oil... change every 25 hours

OR 5w-30 or 10w-30 synthetic all year round.. same 25 hour interval.. be sure to check it often!
Viscosity is one thing. Detergent factor is another. Because lawnmowers do not have oil filters, they usually do not use a detergent motor oil. Detergent is made to pickup and hold contaminants in solution until it can be cleaned through a filter medium. Lawnmowers usually don't go to all the trouble of an oil filter due to the specific service life and duty requirements of their engines. If you were to run a non-detergent oil in your automobile engine, you'd wind up with sludge-clogged oil passages and hydraulic valve lifters in the long run. Bad news.

    So, the short answer is ';probably not';

  • What oil i can use for hydrostatic bearings, at what viscosity?

i am doing a project in hydrostatic bearing, can any one suggest some oil that i can use for lubricating, and also i want to know the viscosity of the fluid? What oil i can use for hydrostatic bearings, at what viscosity?
The best oil for most 30w non detergent. It's the pressure that keeps them ( in the float). There are so many synthetics out their now. I'd have to do more research. Depends on temp.too. 10w 40w (10-4 good buddy)

    What oil viscosity?

1989 thunderbird with 108000 miles. Should i use 10/30 or 20/50? Its winter time, and here in Oregon i have a high temp of 45.What oil viscosity?
In this weather, I wouldn't recommend anything over 10W-30 SAE. Even with 108K, this isn't all that bad for that old a car.

In the summer time, if your mechanic recommends 20 - 50 SAE it wouldn't hurt, but 20 - 50 SAE in the winter time runs the risk of flooding the engine bearings.

Just be certain that you use a good quality motor oil and you will be fine.

Good Luck and Merry ChristmasWhat oil viscosity?
I'd stick with the 10W-30. It's better to be safe than sorry. Short and simple. Hope I was of some help.
i have a 1988 olds and i use 10w30 and its got more miles then yours.the viscosity is the thickness of the oil.
    20-50w for your situation.
Ask your mechanic what is reccomended. With a high mileage engine maybe higher viscosity could be reccomended.
Running thick oil in A high mile vehicle can do more damage than good.It takes longer for the thicker oil to reach critical engine parts

You should run the Manufactures recommend viscosity for the life of the vehicle 5w-30 for summer 10w-30 for winter.

    Owner operator E-Z Lube
    I'd recommend 5w-30.....

much better cold start up flow at lower temps over 10w-30...

10w-30 in the summer..... not the other way around.

I wouldn't use 20w-50 even if recommended to..... unless the engine was using alot of oil.... and or leaking alot of oil...... and or had very low oil pressure (10lbs per 1000 rpm)
Only use the heaver oil if you have to ad oil between changes. If you plan to start the car at or below freezing you will need the lighter oil anyway.
oil viscosity is the thickness of the oil. 10w-30 the ten is the winter weight when started up, once @ normal operating temp. it is then 30. With the amount of time and miles on your vehicle i would highly reccomend using a higher viscosity oil such as 10w-50 or something near. Reason being, with the higher mileage there is obviously much more wear on the internals such as the main bearing, crank journals, connecting rods, etc. to compensate for these larger clearences a thicker oil can be used. Also from experience the valvoline MAX LIFE oil does indeed work much better on older cars also due to the additive package.

What is the order of viscosity of hand soap, vegetable oil, car oil, vanilla, maple syrup, and honey?

Order from most to least viscous pleaseWhat is the order of viscosity of hand soap, vegetable oil, car oil, vanilla, maple syrup, and honey?
Honey, Car Oil, Hand Soap, Maple Syrup, Vegetable Oil, Vanilla.

In my opinion...I could be wrong.

A lot of this stuff depends on the brands too ya know!
