You don't need this..just buy season appropriate oil for your chain oil, comes in light for winter, medium for spring and fall, and heavy for summer.Where can i find a viscosity additive for chain saw bar oils?
Take a look in your local phone book and look in the Yellow pages for equipment rentals. You should see a sub category for equipment maintenance. Most rental places as well as home improvement stores wil carry that additive.

Using two different viscosity motor oils
Is it alright to use 4 quarts of 5w-30 and 1 quart of 5w-20 oil in my car? The car is a 2004 Subaru Legacy and the oil is Castrol Syntec Blend. The car only takes 4.7 quarts of oil, so really I'd only be using .7 quarts of the 5w-20. Using two different viscosity motor oils

Mixing Motor Oil Viscosities?
My car needs an oil change badly. Most of its motor oil has evaporated from sitting there for two months (I know how bad that is for Delco Batteries).
The problem is that I need to move it 67 miles away from its current location because we moved. I know it will make the trip. When I get there I plan to do a complete oil change.
I have two quarts of 5W-30 and one quart of 5W-20. Will it be safe to mix those two? The ride is only once, as soon as I get there I will change the oil and filter as I have the supplies there.

I bought an old mbz 190d diesel- The oil looked like it was suposed to- black. yesterday, the temp got a little higher than normal, but not overheating. I also notices a new click noise, faint. It leaks some oil, so I topped it off with 10w40. I don't know what was currently in there.
It began making the clicking knocking noise louder while running, and within 15 miles stalled and I believe it is near siezing.
I imagine that I threw a rod bearing or did some kind of severe internal engine damage. I'm trying to figure what the culprit was. old bad oil with viscosity breakdown? mixing oil types, or was this just to little too late. The car had over 400k miles on it.

That's alot of miles, but not for a diesal . I don't know if you know that a diesal takes a difforent motor oil then cars do. if you put the wrong oil in it that was the problem.

i own a repair shop,and in case of an emergency its not bad to have to do this ,but it wont kill the engine,oil will mix together,its not like its going to separate inside the engine,but it is a good idea to try and stay with the right weight of oil,brand name isn't that important,but the weight of it does affect the viscosity of it,but your not going to kill if you add the wrong weight to it,all oils will mix ,other wise there would be lot of blown up engines out there right now,you should be ok as long as you change it at least every 3 thousand,good luck,i hope this helps.Are there any adverse effects to mixing engine oil brands/viscosities?

VW recommends I use castrol 5w-40 syntec and change at 10k mile intervals. I have some free Mobil 1 5w-30 that is not VW recommended. What if any difference would it make? If I change my oil at 5k miles can I use any brand synthetic motor oil between 0w-40 or 5/10w-30/40 with no negative results on my 2007 2.0t FSI engine?

im a ford technician. we always use the ford recommended viscosity. in this case its 5w30, 5w20 is used on newer engines. nothing will happen if you use 5w30 but i dont see why you would want to change the viscosity.

It is cheaper ot change oil than to repair an engine. Play it safe and change the oil sooner than later. It is not worth sending oil samples to a lab for analysis. It is not necessarily the Viscosity that wears out but the additives that encase the polutants in the oil that wear out.

Yes , synthetic is definitely the way to go , I have used Mobil 1 for the past several years and am greatly pleased
with in . Used in Chevrolet Silverado and Ford 500 .

No! Don't add any additives to your oil unless they are specifically made for motorcycles... Even if they are motorcycle specific I would be a little wary.

Pag oil nd 8 is what viscosity? for toyota supra 1986?
I am converting a 1986 Toyota Supra to R 134a. I found online that it uses 4oz of pag oil nd 8. I have never seen this. I have seen viscosity 46, 100, 150. I am assuming a pag oil 100 would work. But dose nd8 mean viscosity 80?

If it's burning a quart of oil a week, as seen by blue smoke where ever you go, it's not running great. If it's leaking that much, find out where it's leaking and change the gasket to stop it.

My grandad used a 15/40 Deisel oil when his farm trucks started to smoke he would add 1 quart to every 5 quarts of regular engine oil they did'nt smoke as much but he would use a truck until it quit if you are not planning to use your car till it stops you may want to go another route.

The viscosity of your base oil never changes. What does change and wear out is the additives in the oil which prevent foaming, rust and resist pressures from loads. These additives break down and wear out. If you run your gear oil too long or too hot then your mechanical components will wear out.
Flash point might be affected as the additives become depleted. If you are worried about flash points then a synthetic gear oil is your best choice and I would not consider using a petroleum based product.

The viscosity of your base oil never changes. What does change and wear out is the additives in the oil which prevent foaming, rust and resist pressures from loads. These additives break down and wear out. If you run your gear oil too long or too hot then your mechanical components will wear out.
Flash point might be affected as the additives become depleted. If you are worried about flash points then a synthetic gear oil is your best choice and I would not consider using a petroleum based product.

Single versus multi viscosity gear oil?
my rav4 states that I should use a single viscosity gear oil (SAE90) for my transfer case %26amp; rear differential. while for the transmission oil it recommends a multi-viscosity oil (75W-90).
question, can I use the multi-viscosity oil (75W-90) for the SAE90 requirement of my transfer case %26amp; rear differential? would this be too thin?

i ruined an engine on a vw rabbit water cooled engine i took advice from a oil expert and added 10w 30 oil it cooked in about 1 month as the oil broke down the outside temp was in the upper 90's the owners Manuel stated 10w30 shouldn't be used above 75

Grab almost any owners manual and look in the customer data area there will be a thermometer illustrated there with viscosity chart showing -35 degrees 0wt-, 5wt-30 at the bottom and and as temp averages go up slightly heavier oil at 100 degrees 10wt-40. 15wt-50 and so on. In the artic -60 degrees they do not turn off engines because they will not restart. Super cold temps need oil that won't freeze solid and still flow.

Now if you are talking about an air cooled engine yes it would matter. Air cooled engines use outside air to cool the oil to keep the engine from overheating.

Oil i would use 5W30 if it is cool to cold where you are, or if its hot where you are, i would use 10W30, as for the coolant, that vehicle calls for DexCool. Do not mix coolant types. Dexcool is a redish colour. If the engine has over 50,000 miles on it use a good quality 10w30 in the winter and 10w40 in the summer. Over about 125,000 I'd use a good 20w50 in the summer for extended daily temps over 90-95 deg.
As far as coolant...Dex-Cool is in the process of settling lawsuits for cooling system and engine damages! This stuff clogs cooling systems-period! Use regular antifreeze. Its cheaper and despite what some people will tell you it will not harm your engine or any seals-period! The water pump has the same seals as pre-dexcool water pump seals-period!

ill bet in the back window, you see the symbol ULEV, right? as soom as you go to a thicker oil, you increase the amount of work that the engine has to do, and the amount of gas that it is going to use. those engines are built pretty well. the 520 is your best bet, and i would stick with that until you start consuming to much oil more than a quart in 3000 miles.
No...don't go to the higher viscosity oil. The 5/20 works just fine during normal everyday use. Unless you consistently operate your car at very high duty cycles (and I mean like driving the BAJA 1000 every day 24/7) you will end up doing MORE damage to your car by using the higher visc oil. MOST of the damage is done to your engine at startup and during the first 5 minutes or so of operation. The oil is cold, hard to pump and not sticking to surfaces very well. Even hot summer days in stop and go traffic won't cause as much wear as having too THICK an oil. It gets technical from here.
Multi viscosity oils work like this: Polymers are added to a light base(5W, 10W, 20W), which prevent the oil from thinning as much as it warms up. At cold temperatures the polymers are coiled up and allow the oil to flow as their low numbers indicate. As the oil warms up the polymers begin to unwind into long chains that prevent the oil from thinning as much as it normally would. The result is that at 100 degrees C ( 212 F) the oil has thinned only as much as the higher viscosity number indicates. Another way of looking at multi-vis oils is to think of a 20W-50 as a 20 weight oil that will not thin more than a 50 weight would when hot.
Multi viscosity oils are one of the great improvements in oils, but they should be chosen wisely. Always use a multi grade with the narrowest span of viscosity that is appropriate for the temperatures you are going to encounter. In the winter base your decision on the lowest temperature you will encounter, in the summer, the highest temperature you expect. The polymers can shear and burn forming deposits that can cause ring sticking and other problems. 10W-40 and 5W-30 require a lot of polymers(synthetics excluded) to achieve that range. This has caused problems in diesel engines (Note: 18 wheeler trucks use 15w40 oil in thier engines and those are mostly 14liter 500 HP powerplants that run nearly 24/7 coast to coast thru all kinds of weather and terrain weighing 80,000 pounds), but fewer polymers are better for all engines. The wide viscosity range oils, in general, are more prone to viscosity and thermal breakdown due to the high polymer content. It is the oil that lubricates, not the additives. Oils that can do their job with the fewest additives are the best.
So...if your car manufacturer sez use 5w20 then use it.
the only reason to go with a higher viscosity is to maintain oil pressure if the bearing clearances are too large. otherwise, use what the manufacturer recommends because your engine has been engineered to use that oil. thicker oil will reduce your gas mileage at the least and damage your engine at worst, especially during cold weather starts
i own a repair shop and and i wouldn't go that high with it right now, i tell you the one thing that will make it last real good is change it to a synthetic oil like 5-w-30 Mobil one ,its probably the best oil right now on the market ,they invented synthetic oil ,and i use it in everything i own as do my customers ,and i highly recommend it to anyone who wants their car to last a real long time,you can stay with 5-w-30 year round in it also,and that makes it easy to remember,but you can run like 7-10 thousand miles on this stuff,i go around 9-10 thousand on change myself,and it does really good,but it might be something to think about,its probably the best thing you,ll ever do for your car,good luck hope this helps.

Unless you consistently operate your car at very high duty cycles (and I mean like driving the BAJA 1000 every day 24/7) you will end up doing MORE damage to your car by using the higher visc oil. MOST of the damage is done to your engine at startup and during the first 5 minutes or so of operation. The oil is cold, hard to pump and not sticking to surfaces very well. Even hot summer days in stop and go traffic won't cause as much wear as having too THICK an oil. It gets technical from here.
Multi viscosity oils work like this: Polymers are added to a light base(5W, 10W, 20W), which prevent the oil from thinning as much as it warms up. At cold temperatures the polymers are coiled up and allow the oil to flow as their low numbers indicate. As the oil warms up the polymers begin to unwind into long chains that prevent the oil from thinning as much as it normally would. The result is that at 100 degrees C ( 212 F) the oil has thinned only as much as the higher viscosity number indicates. Another way of looking at multi-vis oils is to think of a 20W-50 as a 20 weight oil that will not thin more than a 50 weight would when hot.
Multi viscosity oils are one of the great improvements in oils, but they should be chosen wisely. Always use a multi grade with the narrowest span of viscosity that is appropriate for the temperatures you are going to encounter. In the winter base your decision on the lowest temperature you will encounter, in the summer, the highest temperature you expect. The polymers can shear and burn forming deposits that can cause ring sticking and other problems. 10W-40 and 5W-30 require a lot of polymers(synthetics excluded) to achieve that range. This has caused problems in diesel engines (Note: 18 wheeler trucks use 15w40 oil in thier engines and those are mostly 14liter 500 HP powerplants that run nearly 24/7 coast to coast thru all kinds of weather and terrain weighing 80,000 pounds), but fewer polymers are better for all engines. The wide viscosity range oils, in general, are more prone to viscosity and thermal breakdown due to the high polymer content. It is the oil that lubricates, not the additives. Oils that can do their job with the fewest additives are the best.
So...if your car manufacturer sez use 5w20 then use it.
the only reason to go with a higher viscosity is to maintain oil pressure if the bearing clearances are too large. otherwise, use what the manufacturer recommends because your engine has been engineered to use that oil. thicker oil will reduce your gas mileage at the least and damage your engine at worst, especially during cold weather starts
i own a repair shop and and i wouldn't go that high with it right now, i tell you the one thing that will make it last real good is change it to a synthetic oil like 5-w-30 Mobil one ,its probably the best oil right now on the market ,they invented synthetic oil ,and i use it in everything i own as do my customers ,and i highly recommend it to anyone who wants their car to last a real long time,you can stay with 5-w-30 year round in it also,and that makes it easy to remember,but you can run like 7-10 thousand miles on this stuff,i go around 9-10 thousand on change myself,and it does really good,but it might be something to think about,its probably the best thing you,ll ever do for your car,good luck hope this helps.

I work as a miller. While reading the embossed brass badge on a very old mill I came across this description for what oil to use in the worm drive.
It says, ';Use a compounded steam cylinder oil containing 5-10% acid-less tallow and having a viscosity of 150 seconds saybolt universal at 210 degrees F';.
I known Tallow is a rendered form of beef or mutton fat, processed from suet.
I know Viscosity is a measure of the resistance of a fluid which is being deformed by either shear stress or extensional stress.

I changed my oil viscosity good or bad?
Im using an older car (15+ years) right now and I decided it's summer and i should change my oil. I think here i may have a few problems, first, my oil reserve spewed oil like no other but when i took my oil filter off nothing really came out. Normal? I was told because it's an older car, there is more wear and leaks i should perhaps switch to a higher viscosity (5W-30 to 10W-30). Especially in the summer. Now the manual says 5W is preferred but 10W was also mentioned an alternative. Is this okay? Then I made the mistake of buying 10-40 (1 quart) and people told me it was okay to mix it in just as long as it was diluted by the other oil. ??? I guess my overall question is, is my car going to blow up and should i re-do my oil change and put 5W back in. your oil will be fine....but no oil in the oil filter is bad. If it's leaking, have the leaks repaired.
You can't go wrong drain all the old oil and replacing it totally with new oil of suitable viscosity. By the way, leaks have nothing to do with viscosity. Once your oil pan or some other area of the engine's lubricating casing is leaking, changing oil viscosity will not help and you will constantly lose oil pressure and have to tap up often. Get the leak fixed first

Some oil filters will drain the oil back out after the engine is shut off, some have an anti drain back valve built in, so it may be normal not to see a large amount of oil pour out, usually some oil will be present any way. You didn't complain of any noises or issues so I assume the engine is running normal.
I wouldn't worry too much if you just used one quart, and you could safely use 10W30 at your next oil change, 5W30, and 5W20 oils are light duty oils that manufacturers use primarily to get a slight improvement on there fuel mileage certifications,

big time, maybe not where u live but it gets to -40 celcius where i do. we plug our cars in, they have block heaters that keep your engine warm.
basically the engine oil gets thick and will take a few minutes to warm up so it can properly lubricate your engine. meanwhile metal on metal parts are wearing against eachother without lube, such as pistons to the cylinders quickly loosing engine compression

Absolutely nothing. All oil is compatible with one another even to mix synthetic and regular oils. In the winter time your choice may cause a problem, but even then it is just one quart. It will be fine till your next oil change, so don't sweat it. BTW the manufactures recommendations are just suggestions. Any oil that you buy in an auto parts store or even a supermarket will be just fine. It is more important to keep your oil topped off than what kind of oil you put in.
That was a bad idea. You should ALWAYS stick to the factory specs. Thicker oil will not get into small cracks to lube well.
Switch back soon. Oil is cheap.

Regarding 5w30 oil viscosity?
5w30 oil would start/crank at the 5 viscosity index, during the first 15/20 minutes, as the heat activated viscosity modifiers transform the viscosity index to 30 at the full operating temp, does the engine essentially operate at progressively higher viscosity indexes until it reaches the 30 viscosity index, ie does the oil work its way from 5 to 6 to 7 to 8 etc. etc. until it reaches the designed 30 viscosity index, said another way, would the 5w30 oil be ';transformed lenearly'; beginning at a viscosity index of 5 and ending at a viscosity index of 30, and if this is true it would mean that a lot of people are doing a lot of driving on oil that has not been totally transformed to it full viscosity index? a mechanical engineer i know here in san antonio used to batch test the synthetic oil used by southwest airlines planes and he knows a lot about oil and he really tried to answer but could not. appologize if confusing, thanksRegarding 5w30 oil viscosity?

Best Oil Viscosity for B18A?
I have a 1991 B18a1, and the previous owner ran 20W50 Castrol Syntec Synthetic Blend. Everybody told me it was way too heavy, So then I started running 10W30 Castrol Syntec Full Synthetic oil. It ran nice but it burns it up quicker and I was wondering if I should move up to like 20W40 or something around there. I recently heard people use heavier oils in B series motors that rev high. What should I use? The motor has 114,000 on it
it tends to burn up when i drive at a constant rate of 120 or more for an extended period of time
I think I'm going to stay with castrol syntec, its the best oil i've ever used so far. The car drives really well with it. I'm just questioning the type of viscosities and what I should use. I think 20w50 was too heavy, but for a B series, 10w30 is too light, burns up to quickly

Yes. If a heavier oil is used in the engine other than what the manufacturer specifies it will cause drag on the crankshaft and other moving parts. This will result in decreased fuel efficiency.

The 10W and the 5W of these ratings is how heavy the oil is during the winter. The viscosity is not enough to make very much of a difference, especially if the weather is above freezing when you start your car.

As for oil, I only use 5w30 full synthetic in my 300zx turbo, and Plugs should be NGK. You don't have to Gap the plugs just check to make sure the electrode isn't touching the ground.

Specially on cold days. You take 10w-30 of synthetic and conventional. Leave it out in the garage over a cold night and the synthetic still seems to flow better the next day.

I saw a drum pump, Tuthill Fill-Rite FR 300 series and wanted to know if this can be use to pump hydraulic oil or used oil. If it can, does anyone know its viscosity limation for it? Since I remember rotary vane pumps are used for low viscosity fluids such as diesel or gasoline.

The best oil for most 30w non detergent. It's the pressure that keeps them ( in the float). There are so many synthetics out their now. I'd have to do more research. Depends on temp.too. 10w 40w (10-4 good buddy)

In this weather, I wouldn't recommend anything over 10W-30 SAE. Even with 108K, this isn't all that bad for that old a car.
In the summer time, if your mechanic recommends 20 - 50 SAE it wouldn't hurt, but 20 - 50 SAE in the winter time runs the risk of flooding the engine bearings.
Just be certain that you use a good quality motor oil and you will be fine.

Also from experience the valvoline MAX LIFE oil does indeed work much better on older cars also due to the additive package.
